Have We Accepted Mental Illnesses as a Reality?
Mental illnesses in the U
nited States have not been treated serious, often times written off as "all in the head" or "not real". We as a nation are ignorant to medical cases that are legitimate, until recently. There was, however, literature a few years back that included mental illness.
In, “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.” we see mental illness showcased in the most serious it has been. Though this took place in the 60’s so it is valuable to show how mental health seriousness has been dropped as years went by. The main character is very young when she is sent to a mental ward to be locked up. She has voices in her head that are so in depth that there is a whole world inside her mind.
